Christmas and New Year Safari

Trading the usual festive routine for sunrise game drives is one of the best ways to end the year. Kenya in December is warm and green, wildlife is active, and the country is in a celebratory mood. If you’re planning a Christmas or New Year safari in Kenya, this guide covers what to expect, where to go and how to book.

Why December Works for a Safari

Good weather. Kenya’s short rains usually clear around mid-December, leaving warm days and green landscapes. Early December can still bring showers, usually in the afternoon or evening, and January is typically dry with hot, clear days.

Active wildlife. The Great Migration herds are in Tanzania’s Serengeti at this time of year, but the Maasai Mara and Kenya’s other parks still offer lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and other resident wildlife, with newborn animals often visible. Migratory birds are also present in many parks.

Lush scenery. Green landscapes make for dramatic photography, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.

The festive atmosphere. December is Kenya’s holiday season, and Christmas and New Year are widely celebrated across the country.

Long weekends. In 2026, both Christmas Day (25 December) and New Year’s Day (1 January 2027) fall on a Friday. That makes a short weekend safari practical for travellers based in Nairobi.

Where to Go

Maasai Mara

Kenya’s most famous reserve is a rewarding Christmas destination even without the migration. Resident big cats and large elephant and giraffe populations make for strong game viewing. Choose from a 3-day, 2-night Maasai Mara safari or combine it with other parks.

Amboseli National Park

Amboseli is known for large elephant herds and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, which are often clearest in the early morning. A 3-day, 2-night Amboseli safari is a good short option for the festive weekend.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Famous for its birdlife and rhinos, Lake Nakuru pairs well with the Mara. The 4-day, 3-night Mara and Nakuru safari covers both in a manageable trip.

Samburu National Reserve

For something different, northern Kenya offers dry landscapes and wildlife found less commonly in the south. Consider the 3-day, 2-night Samburu safari or the 5-day Northern Circuit safari.

Combine safari with the coast

If you want to end the year on a beach, combine a safari with time on the coast. See the 5-day Coast and Amboseli package or the 9-day Rift Valley, Mara, Amboseli and Mombasa package.

Longer journeys

For a bigger trip, the 7-day Rift Valley, Mara and Amboseli safari and the 11-day Kenya and Tanzania safari cover more ground. The Tanzania extension is also a way to see the Serengeti, where the migration herds are in December.

Celebrating a special occasion

The 10-day honeymoon premium luxury safari is a private option for couples marking the new year together.

Short on time in Nairobi?

The 1-day Nairobi excursion includes Nairobi National Park, a good choice if you’re passing through the city over the holidays.

Tips for Booking a Festive Safari

  1. Book early. December and January are peak season. Lodges and camps fill quickly, and some properties close for part of the period, so the sooner you confirm, the more choice you have.
  2. Expect peak rates. Prices are generally higher over Christmas and New Year, so ask what is included before you decide.
  3. Plan for variable weather. Early December can still be showery, so pack for both sun and rain. Our season-by-season packing checklist covers it.
  4. Travelling with children? Read our guide to a Kenya safari with kids to choose suitable parks and ages.
  5. Check entry requirements. International visitors should confirm current Kenyan entry rules, including the electronic travel authorisation where applicable, well before travelling.
  6. Ask about festive arrangements. Properties handle Christmas and New Year differently, so ask your consultant what’s available at each place you’re considering.
  7. Confirm flexible payment. Eta Adventure Safaris offers enquiry and partial payment options for future travel, so ask how they work for your dates.
